Chinese artificial board industry can produce 100 million cubic meters of boards annually and the volume of production is still increasing. It is estimated that the output will reach 170 million cubic meters per year in 2015. If 50% (85 million cubic meters) of these boards were made of straw, it would consume 102 million tons of straws every year which would account for 15% or so of the whole year production contributing to a reduction of 255 million cubic meters of deforesting. It will be of great help to the lack of wood supply in our country.
According to statistics in epidemiology, there are forty thousand more leukemia patients in our country annually, 50% of which are children mostly among 2-9 years. Formaldehyde released from decoration and furniture is deemed to be the main cause of the increase of leukemia patients.
Adhesives made up of formaldehyde are needed in producing all traditional artificial boards. Every time a standard sized (1220mm*2440mm*18mm) traditional artificial board is produced, about 4 kilos of formaldehyde are used as raw material in making necessary adhesives.
The straws used as the principal raw material of Eco-board are deprived of strong toughness fiber in plant stems and are bonded by Wanhua modified MDI which is strawbinding-oriented. As a result, our Eco-board has both the advantages of the wood particle board and the medium density fiberboard (MDF) making it the ideal upgrade product for traditional wood-based panel.
MDI with a scientific name isocyanate is a widely used advanced polymeric synthetic raw material. In consideration of its safety and stability, MDI even can be applied to producing high standard medical and daily use articles including vascular prosthesis, cardiac valve, refrigerator inner liner, lycra fiber and so on.
The core technology of MDI belongs to the general cooperation Wanhua Industrial Group, the only producer of MDI in our country. Currently, only 8 companies (Wanhua Industrial Group, Bayer, BASF, Huntsman, Dow, NPU, Mitsui Japan and Mitusi Kumho) spreading over 4 nations (China, USA, Gerrmany and Japan) have accessed to the applied technology of MDI. Wanhua's MDI applied technology was awarded first prize of State Science and Technology Awards (issued by State Dept.) in 2007 which was graded the protected level of national technical patent.
The MDI used in Wanhua Eco-board is a strawbinding-oriented eco-friendly adhesive which is developed by Wanhua R& D center. At normal temperature, it is in liquid state with its color ranging from brown to dark brown. The polymeric MDI based adhesive improves the molecule structure of polymeric MDI as well as its compatibility with straw fiber. It has a number of distinguishing features such as high reactivity, strong osmotic driving force, capable of forming strong chemical bonds. Our polymeric MDI can substantially overcome the disadvantages of straw material and be capable of forming a stable compound with straw.
